Golf@Mytton July 2008 Volume 1 Issue 2 Proprietor’s Report. We would like to welcome our new members to Mytton Fold Golf Club. We hope you enjoy your golf here and also join in the social events. In June we hosted both ELGA & ELLGA Scratch Competitions and the events were a huge success and placed Mytton Fold firmly on the map of being a great course and we would like to thank all who were involved in making both events a success. July sees us into some great weekend competitions and members can now view the list of competitions and results via our website where we have created a members area, this can be viewed at www.myttonfold.co.uk/golf Ted Bamborough was the winner of the Algarve Competition and he along with a guest will be joining Jim Hindle & Gordon Lucas in the Algarve later in the year. We would also like to welcome our Pro Mike Bardi back to work after his operation and glad he is progressing well. A happy 21st birthday to Mike’s assistant Nick Pearson. On a sad note Jack Crowe passed away in June and we pass on our condolences to his family. The course entertained ex European PGA tour pro & BBC Golf commentator Paul Eales in June who was doing a course review for a magazine. His overall assessment of the course was good and looked forward to return to play the course in the future. The course is being mapped for Sky Caddie and this will soon be available so for those wanting to use their GPS range finder and the ability to save shots with accurate positioning (But will it find my lost balls? Ed). Mrs Hargreaves. Captain’s Notes. On the 26th April the ELGA Qualifier was played at Mytton Fold. The four man team was chosen to represent the club and the final was played at Darwen Golf Club. I was playing the 17th. When I was told that sadly one of our team members had failed to turn up and we were disqualified. This was really annoying and did not reflect well on Mytton Fold. Would all members who enter competitions, or qualify for single or team events please notify the Professional as soon as possible if they are unable to attend. The Captains Charity (Marie Curie Cancer Care) is regularly receiving small donations by way of the 50p paid in by members and visitors please ‘keep on splashing’! Recently I’ve been talking to one or two ex members who have shown interest in Mytton Fold, we might just see a few old familiar faces around next year. Midsummer Madness was played by mad keen golfers with a shotgun start at 6.30am.Everybody had a great time and a large breakfast to follow. Congratulations and thank you to Gordon Lucas who dreamt up the idea, designed a par 3 course set it out, played in it and came second too???? I keep hearing about the Ladies teams winning competitions everywhere. Well done Ladies .I thought it was only men who were good at playing away. Golf Rules are boring to read and learn but try reading Golf Illustrated 2008 published by the R & A. Garry Davies. Lady Captain’s Notes. The ladies golf section is now in full swing with a lovely day on Lady Captains Day, 18 ladies took part, Maureen Board winning with a marvellous score of 45 points. The day was put to a close with many members and guests enjoying the meal in the evening. Over the last couple of months the ladies have had quite a few teams taking part in Open Competitions at Rossendale, Morecambe, Nelson, Kirby Lonsdale, Silverdale and Grange, having won prizes at 5 out of the 6 courses. June was a very busy month with the ladies ELLGA Scratch and Worsley Trophy held at Mytton. Many comments were received praising the condition of the course. Individual honours for the scratch went to Welsh Ladies Closed Champion Kirsty O’Connor, 2nd Emma Clegg, 3rd Chris Stokes. The winners of the scratch team were Pleasington, team winners for the Worsley Trophy were Harwood. We had a wonderful amount of entries for the Sip It and Flip It, 20 teams on a hot summers evening took part in this fun night of wine and nibbles on each Tee – whilst trying to play. The Jubilee BBQ was a great success and we were very lucky again to have such a warm sunny day. Many Competition Days are still remaining; we have the ELGA Qualifier in July. Mytton’s Mixed Open and Ladies Open in August. Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the season Linda Clegg. Lady Captain. Juniors’ Report. At long last we have some junior activities to report. Two events have been held to enable juniors to gat handicaps to enable them to enter competitions. Please note; if you still need to get a handicap give me a ring and I will arrange for it to happen. Lessons are now available through Nick in the Pro Shop so contact him directly for information. Three events have taken place recently with George Mathews winning the Jubilee Cup, Harry Crossley winning the Frank Hargreaves Memorial day and Jordan Whalley/Chris Hughes winning the Adult/Junior Competition. Please note that the next junior event will be Captains Day on the 3rd August so watch for the entry sheet appearing on the junior notice board. The juniors who took part in the Adult/Junior event have suggested that we should hold more events like this as they get to meet adult members and learn more about rules/etiquette. I therefore intend to run them each month, the first being on Sunday 20th July. Watch for the entry sheet on the notice board. I also intend to run a summer league during the summer holidays. It will run each Wednesday during the 6 weeks. Your best 3 scores over the 6 weeks will count towards the overall winner. Further details will be on the junior notice board next week. The number of entries in junior events is still very low and so it is important that you enter as many as possible in order for us to continue to provide a junior programme. Tips from the Pro! Putting Tips Keep the pressure in your hands soft and constant throughout the stroke, sensitivity and feel is obviously a major part of producing a good putting action. If your hands are tight you will be denying yourself that ‘feel factor’. Also if your grip pressure changes during your stroke, it’s probably not a stroke and more like a hit, jab, push, lynch, spasm…. Well you get the point. Also remember that there is no independent hand action in the putting stroke, the shoulders arms and hands should all be working in unison. To see if your hands are moving, as a drill try watching your hands very carefully throughout the stroke instead of watching the ball! You should be able to see what your hands are doing quite easily. Finally check your eyeline! If you hold your putter across your eyeline it should run parallel to your intended putting line. There has been an exciting development in the nest box on the 1st tee. Seven blue tits are ready to fledge – watch out around the 6th June for their maiden flights. There is no sign of life in the old blackbird’s nest and it looks like it is not going to be used this year but if you look in the brickwork under the bridge going to the 17th tee, there is evidence of a blackbird’s nest and a couple were certainly keeping a watchful eye as we walked over the bridge and there was also a blackbird casually picking out worms on the 2nd tee and again, we got the feeling she was waiting for me to disappear before she headed back to her nest. It was good to see that the mesh on the drain on the 1st pond has helped to stop the tadpoles escaping and tadpoles are now swimming in amongst the water boatmen on this pond. If you look carefully, you can see a great tit’s nest in an old fencing post but I could only see one, lonely mouth as I looked in. Strong winds have blown the nest box away which was at the back of the tee. On the 2nd pond, flag iris are blooming. The bulrushes (or cattails) are now past their best as their seeds disperse on the wind. A moorhen scurried out of the pond into the railway banking but there was no sign of chicks on this pond. The elusive greenkeeper could be found on the 3rd fairway and he told me that there had been three hares on the 14th fairway earlier in the afternoon (probably more “hairs” than on James the green keepers head). As we passed the 16th pond, a tiny moorhen chick scuttled into the grass and a trail showed where the parent bird had been moving in and out of the pond. There were also three more young moorhens on the 4th tee but it looks as though they have been devastated by the crows as there are very few chicks compared to the number of eggs on the nests in my last report. Chaffinches were chirruping on the 4th tee and a robin was flitting in a nearby tree. Just as I thought we were not going to see anything very interesting, a spotted flycatcher flew into the tree at the back of the 12th green. Despite spending minutes looking for the nest, we were unsuccessful. It must have been watching close by because, as we moved away from the tree, it reappeared and flew right over us. A kestrel hovered over the back of the 6th green and jackdaws, rooks and crows flew out of the disused quarry. A song thrush serenaded us as we walked by. The nest box on the 11th tee contains eight blue tit chicks but one is a runt and will not fledge. Something is amiss in a tree just in front of the 14th tee bed! There is rabbit fur and a rabbit’s foot in a small hole and some sort of animal muck at the base of the tree. This could belong to an owl but there were no pellets or perhaps a stoat but they do not normally climb up trees. Any suggestions please? Lots more to come – wait for the next instalment.
