Members News & Results Season Starters Mytton Fold Golf Club started their season with a bang when it held its Captain’s Drive In on Saturday followed by the Lady Captain’s Drive In on the following day.
The slight cloud cover made for a warmer start for the men on the summer course. Captain Frank Hindle started his day with a big cheer from the watching crowd as his slightly wayward tee shot landed just in bounds.
Members celebrated the return to the summer course with some excellent golf. Showing the way, although last to finish, were John Welch and Peter Fox who scored an impressive 44 pts. Also shaking off the cobwebs were Wayne Ivinson and Dave Pennington who only lost out on the win courtesy of a card playoff. Gordon Lucas and Neil Osliffe were hot on the heels of the leading pairings with 43 points.
The par 3 first was the scene of the 2s competition with Garry Ashton, Dave Halsall and Wayne Ivinson all birdying the hole.
Sunday dawned bright and cold, the overnight frost dictating that the ladies were to use the shorter winter course. The exception to this was the first hole, where Lady Captain Marian Gradwell opened the summer season’s golf.
The beautiful conditions brought out the best in the competitors and the Lady Captain’s Drive In resulted in a three way tie which had to be resolved by a card playoff. Winner Joanne Carter led home Maureen Board and Doreen Hammond, all with 39 points.
Patricia Leyland came home in fourth, just one point behind, and she was followed by four ladies, Linda Clegg, Jean Davies, Jean Havard and Pauline White, all on 37 points.
Linda Clegg also won the front nine competition with Allison Nuttall taking both the back nine prize and the 2s competition. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Garry Hangs On!
Garry Davies hangs on for the win Winter’s come to an end – at least as far as Mytton Fold Golf Club is concerned. In the final round of the Winter Singles, it was a win for John Parkinson with a 65-13-52 on the shortened course. It was also a confirmation of the success of the Handicap Committee as John was the 11th different winner in the 11 weeks of the competition.
Mick Bryan (66-13-53) followed closely on John’s heels with Gary Ashton (70-17-53) only missing out on the runners-up slot following a card playoff.
The final Winter Singles title was taken by Garry Davies who, despite missing the final round, managed to hold onto his slender lead to win with 45 points. Philip Hammond failed to capitalise on Garry’s absence and closed his account with 43 points. Mick Kelbie took third overall with 35 points.
In the Winter Pairs the final weekend knockout competition was won by David Halsall and Peter Main with 39 points, two points ahead of Wayne Ivinson and John Welch.
In the Ladies Winter Singles knockout competition it was a win for Judith Kay who beat Maureen Board in the final. In the Ladies Doubles, Linda Clegg and Jean Davies were the season’s winners.
It was a long, but successful day for Captain Elect John Berry and Allison Nuttall in the mixed doubles. Due to the snow-interrupted winter season, both the semi-final and the final were played on the same day, with John and Allison beating Bernard and Judith Kay 2 and 1 to take overall honours.
Just to reinforce that summer is on its way, Mytton Fold start their season with a bang with the Captain’s Drive In on Saturday, closely followed by the Lady Captain’s Drive In the following day. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Eddie the Eagle
Eddie Bootle was flying on the par 4 tenth hole at Mytton Fold Golf Club on Saturday. Playing in the Singles Winter Series, Eddie shot an eagle on this uphill, 276 yard, challenging hole to start his back nine with a bang. This week’s winner was Mick Walsh, who scored an outstanding 67-22-45 on the 16-hole winter course. Left floundering in his wake were Philip Hammond (59-10-49), Jim Bridge (74-25-49) and Peter Kiddie (75-26-49), only separated by a card playoff. The 2s prize fund was a five-way split between Philip Hammond , Mark Slater and Ted Bamborough at the 1st, Eddie's eagle at the 10th and Ian Shaw's at the 11th. With just 2 weeks to go, Garry Davies still leads the Singles Winter League, but by just 2 points from the closing Philip Hammond. In the Winter Pairs, Dave Halsall/Peter Main and Captain Frank Hindle/Mick Kelbie both scored 43 points. With only one match to go before the final 4-pair playoff, teams are having to drop scores. Halsall and Main are currently leading on 289 points with Wayne Ivinson/John Welch on 283. The next three pairs are separated by just 3 points. With just two playoff places remaining, Captain Elect John Berry/Dave Clegg have 274 points, Captain Frank Hindle/Mick Kelbie 272 points, and Nick Avino/ Chris Czyzyk 271 points. Ian Thomson and John Whittaker have an outside chance of making the final with 261 points. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cheese and Wine Evening
A fantastic night was had by all who attended the Cheese and Wine Evening organised by Lady Captain Marian and Lady Captain Elect Jean, and a wonderful sum of £130 was raised for Lady Captain's Charity. Thanks to Jean and Frank Havard for the use of their lovely home to hold the event. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Fillip for Philip Not to be outshone by his father (Happy Hammond breaks course record – last week’s Advertiser), John’s son, Philip, dominated this week’s Winter Series singles competition at Mytton Fold Golf Club. Hammond Junior totalled a massive 36 points on the shortened, 16-hole winter course to finish a clear 5 points ahead of the closely grouped chasing pack. Fighting over the minor places, and split by a card playoff, were Ian Shaw, Mark Slater and Ray Standring, all with 31 points. With three rounds remaining, Garry Davies still heads the field, some 9 points ahead of Mick Kelbie and 10 points ahead of Philip Hammond. Captain Frank Hindle is fourth, some 14 points behind the leader. Things are much tighter in the Winter Doubles competition where the top four pairings in the league fight it out on the 27th February. Winners this week were David Halsall and Peter Main, who beat Wayne Ivinson/John Welch on a card playoff, both pairs having scored 40 points. These two pairings are tying for the lead of the Winter Doubles league, with 283 points each after 11 rounds, and where only the best 7 scores count. Fighting over the two remaining playoff places are John Berry/Dave Clegg (268 points), Nick Avino/Chris Czyzyk (266 points), Captain Frank Hindle/Mick Kelbie (265 points) and Ian Thomson/John Whittaker (260 points). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
John’s a Record Breaker!
John Hammond shot a sensational nett 64 to take this week’s Winter Series Singles on a very frosty Mytton Fold golf course. Using the shortened 16 hole course and winter greens, John shot an outstanding 64-20-44, smashing the club’s winter course record by several strokes. Despite behind seven shots in arrears, Jim Bridge was still delighted with his second placed 77-26-51. Close on his heels were Graham Plant (71-19-52) and fourth placed Mick Walsh (75-23-52) only separated by a card playoff. Despite being away for a three week holiday, Garry Davies still heads the Winter League, but by just 6 points ahead of a closing Mick Kelbie. It was no surprise to anyone when John Hammond took a share of the 2s prize fund; however an eagle on the par 4 17th was a bit special. Martin Holden took his share of the pot with a birdie on the 9th. In the Winter Pairs it was a close run result with a tie at the top Here Wayne Ivinson and John Welch shared the lead with Peter Main and Dave Halsall, both pairings scoring 43 points. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mixed up at Mytton Fold Mytton Fold’s golfers livened up their social golfing calendar this week when the Ladies and Seniors combined their Tuesday competition format. The ladies drew lots to see which gentlemen joined them for a team stableford competition over 11 holes with numerous special prizes on offer. Mick Walsh made a welcome return to the club after several weeks of absence, and his birdie 2 on the first hole showed that he’d not lost his touch. This excellent start helped his team partners of Maureen Board and Bernard Downes to win the competition overall with a score of 66 points. In second place were Linda Clegg, Bernard Kay and Frank Havard some 3 points adrift. Linda starred in this team by taking the longest ladies’ drive on the 6th. The final podium position, with 60 points, was taken by Pauline White, Dave Jackson , John Hammond and Graham Plant. Star of the show here was Dave Jackson who took the ‘nearest the pin’ in the first. Terry Steer took the longest Seniors’ drive with a monster on the 7th hole. In the Winter Series, the singles competition was won by Captain Frank Hindle with 35 points. Graham Plant was beaten into second place following a card playoff and Mick Scriven took third with 34 points. Gary Ashton was the sole recipient of the 2s pot, with an eagle on the par 4 eighth. In the Winter Pairs Captain Elect John Berry and David Clegg took the honours with 41 points, just one point ahead of Wayne Ivinson and John Welch. Taking third, one a busy golfing weekend, was Captain Frank Hindle and partner Mick Kelbie. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ S'NO JOKE!!! Even Mytton Fold Golf Club’s plucky ground staff admitted defeat when the club had to call off its third attempt to hold its 3 Club competition this weekend. Due to be held between Christmas and New Year, the event was postponed twice, and last Saturday was the final opportunity to run this popular fun event. Entrants would have been limited to a maximum of three clubs, one of which had to be a putter; however the weather conditions dictated that a shovel, brush and snowblower would be the most effective implements. Buggies would have replaced by huskies and sleds, and normal golfing footwear replaced by snowshoes. Above: Frank Havard looking suitably Yetified!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Guys and Gals at Mytton Fold Mytton Fold’s Seniors and Ladies joined together in post-competition celebrations following their respective Tuesday Trophy and Chicken Run events.
The seniors played their match over the 16 holes currently open over the winter months at Mytton Fold. In cold, but dry conditions Jim Bridge shot a commendable 30 points with Eddie Scott snapping at his heels, just one point behind. The clubs naturist, or is that naturalist, Terry Steer, made a welcome appearance to take third, again just one shot adrift on 28 points.
The Ladies teed off later, playing just 9 holes, with Maureen Board’s 26 points beating Lady Captain Elect Jean Havard into second place. Pat Leyland took third, following a card playoff.
Both groups enjoyed a Christmas lunch in the hotel where prizes were presented. Bernard Downes’ team won the quiz set by the Ladies.
In the weekend Winter League it was Ian Shaw’s turn to head the field with a 70-19-51 on the shortened course. Mick Kelbie (71-18-53) took the runner-up slot whilst Dave Griffith took the last podium position with a 73-19-54.
For the second week running Garry Davies lost out on third spot following a card playoff, but compensated by scooping the 2s competition. He also heads the Winter League with 40 points; Mick Kelbie is second with 34, whilst Chris Chadwick lies third. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All change @ Mytton Fold
Mytton Fold Golf Club revealed its new officers at the recent Presentation Evening. Incoming Club Captain, Frank Hindle introduced John Berry as Captain Elect whilst new Lady Captain Marian Gradwell announced that Jean Havard was to be the new Lady Captain Elect. Outstanding score of the day belonged to David Halsall and Peter Main who shot an amazing 45 points to head the top scores list in the club’s Winter Pairs. President’s no Turkey!
Mytton Fold Golf Club’s President, David Hargreaves, showed that he was no turkey when he won the club’s Turkey Shoot competition by a clear three points ahead of a tightly packed field.
It was only due to the course’s hardworking greenkeeping staff that the competition could still go ahead following the heavy rainfall of recent days. The damp and slippery conditions underfoot provided a challenging course and it made Hargreaves’ winning margin all the more creditable as the next three finishers had to be settled by a card playoff. The 19th hole results team saw David Halsall take the runner up slot, with Dave Clegg third and Garry Davies fourth.
The first, par three, hole was the scene of the twos competition with Frank Hindle, Philip Hammond and Eddie Scott all shooting birdies. Mytton Fold Ladies are holding their Christmas Fayre on Monday next at 7.30pm. Dr. Barnardo’s is the Lady Captain’s nominated charity and funds raised from this fayre will support this worthy cause. All are welcome and tickets are available on the door. PRESENTATION EVENING

Mytton Fold’s Golfers were out on the following day and the previous evening’s celebrations did nothing to dampen the talent on show. Garry Davies shot an outstanding 62-12-50 on the shortened winter course to beat Frank Eccles (79-28-51) and Mick Walsh (77-24-53). Dave Clegg was singularly successful in the 2s competition, netting himself the whole prizefund! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Foster wins Tuesday Trophy on Thursday!
Harold Foster secured Mytton Fold Golf Club’s top spot when the Seniors played for the Tuesday Trophy – on a Thursday! Just to confuse matters further, members also know this competition as the ‘Three-Man Trophy’, due to the design of the award. Undeterred by such complications Harold Foster made the most of the ideal playing conditions, shooting an outstanding 28 points over the 11 holes to beat off Tony Wilson by a single point. Mick Walsh (26 points) took third spot after a card playoff with Garry Davies.
In the Winter Singles, Ray Standring shot back to the top of the leaderboard with an excellent 41 points, beating runner-up Chris Chadwick by just one point. Third, after a card playoff with Neil Osliffe was Ted Bamborough with 38 points.
Chadwick achieved some level of revenge over Standring, taking a share of the 2s prize fund with a birdie on the 1st. Also in the money were Philip Hammond, Ted Bamborough, Gordon Lucas and Garry Davies with birdies on the par three 9th hole. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Brrrrilliant Tunstall takes top spot!
Frank Tunstall took overall honours in the first round of Mytton Fold Golf Club’s Winter Series with an excellent 79-12-67. Just one stroke behind came fellow 12-handicapper Philip Hammond, whilst third spot was secured by Garry Davies (83-14-69). Ray Standring (79-9-70) trailed home in fourth place in contrast to his Hill Valley successes. Tunstall also scooped the 2s pot with his birdie on the 18th. Captain Ian Thomson and John Whittaker led the Winter Pairs Betterball competition with 40 points, a massive seven ahead of runners-up Nick Avino and Chris Czyzyk. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Crackerjack Ray scores a full house! The 32-strong Mytton Fold contingent enjoyed 3 great days playing Hill Valley’s Emerald Course (twice) and moving to the shorter Sapphire course on the final day. Runner-up on the first day was Tony Wilson, 2 points shy of Standring. President David Hargreaves took Day One’s nearest the pin. Teams were selected by secret draw, but Standring’s excellent scores meant that his partners Kevin Shanley, Roland Hailwood and Bernard White on Day One, together with Jim Bridge, Donald Simpson and Dave Pennington on Day Two, all had great starts. Friday saw the first running of the Andy Capp Handicap, when playing performances on the previous two days created new handicaps for this one event. It was no surprise that Standring had to play off scratch! Despite a reduction of 10 shots, Garry Davies became the competition’s first winner. The ladies of Mytton Fold played their end of season get-together in typical autumnal weather with a fine mist descending on the course soon after the start of the nine-hole event. With enthusiasm undampened by the weather, Pauline White took overall honours with an excellent 21 points, two clear of runner-up Roxanna Clarke, with the final podium position secured by Linda Clegg with 17 points. Let Battle Commence!
Mytton Fold Golf Club’s President, David Hargreaves came out on top in the club’s President v. Captain competition, with his team beating that of Club Captain Ian Thomson by 22 points in a thrilling competition where the lead seesawed backwards and forwards as scores came in throughout the afternoon. Each team leader had selected their teams which included double-point jokers, revealed only when all results were in, and the President gratefully received a crisp £20 note from a gracious, losing Captain. The individual competition was also a close run thing, with Chris Chadwick taking overall honours with 39 points, beating Denis Leaver following a card playoff. Chris Czyzyk took the final podium position just one point behind and beating fourth placed Ted Bamborough again on a card playoff. Division One winner was Tony Wilson, with Jim Bridge taking Division Two. Pauline White headed the Ladies’ Section and Harry Crossley took the Juniors’ prize. The blustery, but mainly dry, weather made for challenging playing conditions and only three players shared the 2s prize fund, with Frank Eccles and Jim Hindle birdying the 1st, while Dave Bolton shot his on the 9th. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nick Nicks the Bill Almond Memorial Trophy Nick Avino was the runaway winner of Mytton Fold’s Bill Almond Memorial Trophy with an excellent 43 points, four clear of runner-up Wayne Ivinson. John Welch took the third spot, Dave Bolton (38 points) Division One, and Gordon Lucas, also with 38 points, Division Two.
In the Ladies section, Roxana Clark headed the field with 44 points, beating Pauline Clark on a card playoff. Harry Crossley, with 31 points took the Junior Section and Captain Elect Frank Hindle secured the Senior’s prize. The 2s sweep was shared between seven players, with Garry Davies, Frank Eccles, Peter Fox and Mark Green all birdieing the opening hole, whilst Peter Tuck and John Whittaker scooped their prizes on the 9th. It was left to Ray Standring to be the lone winner on the 18th. Captain Elect Frank Hindle (85-13=72) set himself something of a benchmark for his upcoming year as Captain of Mytton Fold when he was crowned Champion of Champions on Sunday. Philip Hammond (85-12=73) was just one stroke in arrears at the end of a hard-fought round with Wayne Ivinson (82-8=74) taking the final podium position with the lowest gross of the competition. John Berry (81-10=71) took the Duffer’s Cup with a flourish, firing the lowest gross of the day. John was six strokes clear of the opposition, with second-placed Mick Walsh (100-23=77) and Gordon Lucas (100-20=80) his nearest opposition. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Saturday 12th September and Sunday 13th September
Glorious weather greeted Mytton Fold Golf Club for their Ladies Open on Sunday. In a high scoring competition, Jill Harris from Wilpshire teamed up with Mytton Fold’s Carole Maher and Allison Nuttall to take overall honours with an excellent 88 points. A second Mytton Fold/Wilpshire team of the home Lady Captain, Maureen Board, Jean Sanderson and Barbara Hindle took the runner-up slot some 14 points in arrears. Mytton’s Pauline White teamed up with Barbara Newton (Wilpshire) and Barbara Waring (Darwen), taking the final podium position with 72 points. Even the nearest the pin competition was a shared affair, with Mytton Fold’s Jean Sanderson taking the prize on the 1st, and Wilpshire’s Barbara Hindle winning on the 18th. Don Mashiter (98-26=72) was the winner of the club’s Monthly Medal competition on a card playoff with Philip Hammond (84-12=72). John Parkinson (86-13=73) took third, again on a card playoff, just ahead of Neil Osliffe who shot the lowest gross score (81-8=73). The USA came to Langho, when Mytton Fold held their Texas Scramble on Saturday. The calculators were out to settle the final scores when the team of Neil Osliffe, John Berry and David Clegg took overall honours with a score of 66-3.625=62.375. Runners-up Tony Wilson, Ray Standring and Kevin Shanley rued their bogey on the 14th when they came in with their 67-4.5=62.5. Chris Chadwick, Keith Gill and Gary Keogh took third just 0.375 of a stroke further back when they carded their 68-5.125=62.875. Three teams split the 2s prizes, with the trio of Chris Chadwick, Keith Gill and Gary Keogh together with Wayne Ivinson, John Welch and Stuart Netscher birdying the 1st, while Tony Wilson, Ray Standring and Kevin Shanley were one under par on the 9th. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Saturday 29th August
In the club’s monthly Stableford Competition Wayne Ivinson took overall honours with 39 points, two clear of Chris Chadwick. John Berry secured third, a further point behind. David Clegg took the Division One winner’s prize with 35 points and Martin Holden Division Two with 36 points. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Juniors to the fore! Mytton Fold’s Juniors were the stars of the Club’s President’s Day, with winner Tom and brother Luke Jarrold being split by a card playoff, both carding excellent scores of 42 points in this stableford competition. Close behind came Jordan Whalley, just three points in arrears. Junior Harry Crossley also took a share of the 2s prize fund, with a birdie on the first. In the men’s section, Eddie Scott shot 42 points, four clear of runner-up Barry Hargreaves who had the audacity to beat Club President David Hargreaves into third spot on a card playoff. Mark Schofield (38 points) took Division One and John Walmsley, also on 38 points, headed Division Two. Lady Captain Maureen Board took the Ladies section with an excellent 43 points with Linda Clegg four points behind in second place. Jean Sanderson took the final podium position with 35 points, just edging out Judith Kay (33 points) in fourth. The 2s prize fund was split 5 ways between four players with Chris Chadwick taking a double helping with birdies on both the first and the ninth; junior Harry Crossley (1st), Kevin Shanley (1st) and Mark Slater (9th) took the remaining shares.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Brother wins Memorial Trophy Mytton Fold’s golfers turned out in force for the Roger Osliffe Memorial Trophy. The board competition had an appropriate winner, when Roger’s brother, Neil, played an outstanding round of golf to come in as winner with a nett 6 under par 65 (74-9-65) one shot clear of Mark Schofield (80-14-66), with Tony Cross (82-15-67) taking third spot, 2 shots further back. In Division 1, Chris Chadwick (78-6-72) took the honours and Division 2 was headed by John Welch (95-24-71). Jean Sanderson took the Ladies section with a 103-22-81 just one shot ahead of Lady Captain Maureen Board (106-24-82). Harry Crossley once again scooped the Junior Section with a 105-23-82. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mytton Fold are continuing to race through their busy summer golfing schedule with an Invitation Day and charity events. Sunday provided mixed, and often challenging, weather conditions for the club’s Invitation Day. In the gentlemen’s section Paul Conchie with guest Lawrence Lynch took overall honours, courtesy of a card playoff, ahead of Dennis Leaver and G. Ellis, both pairings scoring 42 points. Chris Czyzyk and C. Byrne took third with 40 points ahead of Dave Clegg and Bob Scott. In the Ladies Section, Jean Sanderson and guest Maggie Harvey from Whalley headed the field with 40 points, beating Lady Captain Maureen Board and Rishton’s Sue Tootell on a card playoff. Sue Hughes was also partnered by a Rishton member, Elsie Blackburn, to take third place. This pairing also took the spot prizes on the 1st and 18th holes respectively. The monthly medal competition led to a 3-way tie at the top, with a card playoff needed to separate Matt Walsh (83,17,66) from runner-up Paul Conchie (74,8,66) and third placed Dave Clegg (77,11,66). John Parkinson (81,13,68) took Division 1 and Captain Ian Thomson (89,17,72) Division 2. Hindles kindle the Fire!
Mixed weather greeted the members of Mytton Fold Golf Club for the second round of the Kevin Shanley Charity competition. This three-round competition supports Derian House and members turned out in large numbers to support this well known local charity. Jim Hindle took the honours with an 82,13,69, some 4 shots off Captain Elect, and namesake, Frank Hindle (86,13,73). John Walmesley (94,21,73) lost out on the runners-up slot on a card playoff. Dave Holden, playing off 28, had a dream start with a par and a bogey to start his round; however the wheels came off on the fourth, where an 11 off the tee, and a resulting 16, made a severe dent to his round. Members have a further opportunity to secure the trophy when the third round is played on the 10th September.
First Stage win for Mytton Fold Pair Following excellent work by the ground-staff and the recovery powers of the course Mytton Fold Golf Club held its qualifying round for the International Pairs Competition on Saturday 18th July in good playing conditions despite the deluges experienced during the previous two days. In a keenly contested event the privilege of representing the club in the next round to International selection was won by Neil Osliffe and John Berry with a better ball total of 44 points. John Parkinson and Matt Day just missed out on selection by one point and suffered further disappointment when beaten into third place on a card play off to Tony Wilson and Garry Davies who took second place with a better back nine in their total of 43 points.. The pairings of Peter Kiddie and Tony Cross along with Steve Brooks and Phil Clegg scored a two on the 1st with Matt Garner and Steve Wild returning a two on the 9th and were awarded a prize of £10 per team The club will be hosting an Invitation day on Sunday 16th August and entry details have been posted on the club notice board. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Good Day for Mytton’s Bakers Dozen With forecast deteriorating weather proving unfounded and benign conditions existing throughout the day 13 players scored better than par in Mytton Fold’s Cavalier Putter medal competition held on Saturday 11th July. Further assisted by the immaculate state of the course Cliff Sweeney headed the field with a net 64 playing off a handicap of 20 beating John Kwasneiwski into second only by the difference in their playing handicap. Mark Schofield continued his excellent form of late and captured 3rd spot with a net 68 but only after a nail biting card play off with 4 other members. Division 1 prize went to Philip Hammond (68) and the Captain Ian Thompson (68) claimed the Division 2 award and with it maintained his charge to the top of the merit table – clearly his year in office having a positive effect on his form. The One That Got Away Mytton Fold Golf Club held its 36 hole gross Club Championship over the weekend of 4/5th July. The competition was extremely tense over the closing holes with 6 players finishing within 3 shots of each other. Neil Osliffe nearly forced a three hole play off on the final green but narrowly failed to convert a 7ft putt losing by one shot to the 2009 Champion Chris Chadwick. Top six finishers being: 1st Chris Chadwick (85,73)158 2nd Neil Osliffe (78,81) 159 3rd Frank Tunstall (78,82) 160 4th Steve Brooks (88,72) 160 5th Tony Wilson (80,81) 161 6th Ray Standring (82,79) 161 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tough fight for Frank Hargreaves Memorial Trophy. On what would have been his 70th birthday, Mytton Fold Golf Club once again celebrated the memory of the club’s founding light, Frank Hargreaves. This event is held dear by Mytton’s members and resulted in a hard-fought competition where the top nine finishers were separated by just one point. It was a credit to the ground staff that the course was able to withstand the torrential thunderstorm of the previous evening, and play started on time, with only the bunkers removed from play. With high scores abounding, it was left to the organisers to work their way through the numerous card playoffs before the results became clear. Lilian Hargreaves presented the awards, with Gary Keogh taking his first major win with 40 points. With the same score, Ted Bamborough won the Senior’s trophy. Second overall was secured by Captain Ian Thomson with Steve Brooks taking third, both with 40 points. Not to be outdone by the men, Lady Captain Maureen Board took the Ladies’ prize with 41 points beating Jean Sanderson into second place by just one point, with Sue Hughes taking third with 39 points. Division One was headed by Chris Chadwick (39 points) and Division Two by Nick Avino (39 points). Harry Crossley took the Junior’s section. The Twos competition was again closely fought, the prize fund being divided seven ways. Scoring birdies on the First were Ian Thomson, John Parkinson and Paul Conchie. Mike Chatburn scored his two on the Ninth, and Sue Hughes, Chris Chadwick and Gordon Lucas ended their rounds with birdies on the final hole. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sip it and Flip it Wednesday 17th June Mytton Fold Golf Club’s Sip It ‘n’ Flip It competition, with refreshments provided for players on each of the tee beds, again proved a very popular social event. The weather caused concern throughout the day but a window of sunny weather prevailed long enough for the competition to be completed in excellent conditions which is probably more than can be said for some of the participants by the end of the evening - the noise of the banter during the presentation proving testament to an evening thoroughly enjoyed by all. With 15 teams entering the competition was split into two nine hole events with prizes for both front and back nine. The front 9 saw the team of Doreen Hammond, Gordon Watts, Don Mashitter and Steve Worral come home with 52 points with Lady Captain Maureen Board, Frank Gilpin, Pauline White and Stephen Theaker four points further back in second. The second 9 holes were won by Jean Davies, Garry Davies, Ray Standring and Tony Wilson with 47 points, just one ahead of Jean Sanderson, Brian Bradshaw, Allison Nuttall and Linda Clegg.
